OpenASR or how should we call it?

A contract has been established between ICSI and Appscio to create an open source, easily interfaceable, competitive accuracy, speech recognizer that comes with free pre-trained models for meetings. While the work is going on, we ask ourselves what a name for the project should be. Ideally, the name should

- have free .org and .com domains

- be not trademarked

- be an acronym that can be pronounced and sounds like a word that is easily memorizeable (Wayne).

OK, let's brainstorm....

TASR and CASPER

Bob Marsh suggested vie email:

how about 'tASR'  -- or TASR  -- pronounced tay-ser, as in the shock device company

or

cASpeR -- CASPER

Dorky, I know...but I did notice that Automatic speech recognition is at the top of the list that the ASR acronym stands for

Why not call it openasr?

Hi,

PRO:

- OpenASR makes the project unique. There can be only one OpenASR.

- OpenASR tells people right away what the project is about

- OpenASR.org is free, OpenASR.com might be free soon.

- I find OpenASR is a memorable project name

Contra:

- OpenASR is not an acronym that forms another memorable word

- Many projects are called open that are in fact not

- OpenASR.com is not free

invert it - ASROpen

ASROpen is prononcable ("azz-rope -in"), it puts the focus on "ASR" rather than burying us in the lists of OpenThisAndThat projects, and I don't think it is 'taken' ... not sure about foreign meanings, the closest I can come is the Al-Asr sura in the Qur'an.

Other ideas...

How about: EASR, PHASR, or PLEASR?

MySTT

MySTT would stand for "My Speech-to-Text" sort of like MySQL. MySTT is pronounceable as "Myst" and means nothing, except that there was a computer game called like this. MySTT.org is free by MySTT.com is not. It is a bandname.

So it is a good prounceable name but other people use it too.

I like MySTT

That's better than OpenASR (IMHO) ... it's reasonably clever without crossing the line into cute, it faintly evokes fun and data, and I think 'STT' is more widely-known and easier-to-grok acronym than 'ASR' for people outside the specialty
